- So how do you set up your voicemail, or call people around campus? What is this AFS acronym really mean, and can I have a personal homepage? Read these tips and tricks to answer your questions and give you a head start on this upcoming year...
 |
Phones - Starting in the fall of 2006, the University will no longer place phones in the rooms of the resident halls, as the majority of students now use their cell phones. Improvements have been made on campus to improve cell phone reception.
However, there still will be "house phones" in the dorms for use by their residents. Also you can apply for "Opt-in Phone Service" and bring your own phone to use in your room.
If you are using either of these campus phone options, you will discover that the University has its telephone system networked so that if you are calling a campus number you only need to dial 1 or 4, then the extension (the 4 is for student Residence Hall Phones, and the 1 is for the rest of campus).
Remember the area code is 574 and the local exchange number is either 631 or 634.
For more information on applying for "Opt-in Phone Service" and other questions about the phones on campus visit the Office of Telecommunications website. |
 |
Voice Mail - Although you may not have a phone in your room, you can still get voice mail messages through ND's voice mail system. To reach the university's messaging system dial 4-7474 (which stands for I-R-I-S-H). The system will then prompt you for your mailbox number (1, 2 or 3), and then it will ask for your passcode, enter it and you've got your voice mail.
To set up your voice mail you need to dial I-R-I-S-H, and as your temporary passcode use 7 1 1 7 0, and listen for instructions on setting up your greeting, name, and passcode...
For more info on voice mails check out the Office of Telecommunications website. |
|
Shared File Space - The easiest way to have control of you shared file space that the OIT provides is to map a network drive directly to your computer at home and access it as you would regularly access any information on your computer.
To find out more information on Shares Space, visit the OIT Shared Space Page
For step-by-step instructions on how to map a drive directly to your home computer : [MS XP Pro ] [Mac OS X] |
|
Personal Homepage - The OIT provides every student at this University the opportunity to host a personal homepage. This page can be accessed via your shared space available by Netfile, in which a "www" folder will be included. The address for your page will be something like this :
http://www.nd.edu/~netID (what is netID?)
For more information on setting up your webpage visit ND's Web Central Information Page. You will also need to set your preffered website location (either AFS or NetFile), and you can do this here... (Remember though, for AFS you need a separate client, while for NetFile you can map a network drive directly to your home computer, see AFS vs NetFile above) |
|
Football Tickets - One of the most Frequently Asked Questions from incoming students is : "How do I obtain Football Tickets?"
Early in the Fall Semester, you will hear about the "Lottery." On the day the Lottery is being held, all students wishing to obtain Football Season Passes must go to the Stadium and obtain a Lottery ticket, according to class year. Seniors usually go in the morning, Junior and Sophomores go around noon, and Freshmen go later in the evening. The next day a Lottery ticket will be drawn, and the student holding that ticket number will be the person with the best seat in the student section, again according to class year. Then the next day, you may go to the Stadium and redeem your lottery tickets for your season pass. It is that simple!
For more information on Notre Dame Football, click here. For other sports, click here. |
|
Books - "How do I get my books?", Go to the Notre Dame Bookstore, fill in your information, and you will see a list of the books that you will need for that specific class. To search by course, go here.
...and just in case you forgot your schedule, visit Inside ND . |

Transpo Trolley is one of the best ways to get from ND's campus to the mall and St. Mary's. The fare is free for any student that shows a valid Notre Dame (or St. Mary's) studdent ID. For more info on "The Sweep" and for a schedule, check out Transpo's website.
